I opened my e-mail first thing in the morning , and found a message from my son sent at 5 a.m . "I think Isabella is coming. We'll keep the phone on only for the midwife. Had I not called you by noon, call dad in Italy and tell him that I will be in touch later". In fact, Daniele and Elizabeth, expecting their first baby, were brave enough to decide to give birth to Isabella at home, sparing her the shock of neon lights and unfamiliar hospital noises. So was it.
Isabella was born around noon. I was traveling, as it is very often the case, so got the news while driving, and I remember asking one only question to my emotional and tired son. "Is she really beautiful?", that was my very odd question. Nothing about her weight nor health. Nothing about labor details or the usual things people ask to new parents. I did not ask, I guess, since I was totally confident that everything was going to be just fine, as it has been. And what I really meant was, is it quite a beautiful experience, isn't it? I wasn't really concerned about Isabella's look. I cared about the fact that the three of them were happy and relaxed now.
So, to make a long story short, WELCOME ISABELLA!!! I am glad that you were so smart to arrive before the 4th of July fireworks but also that you waited for me to be back here in your native country. And regarding those postcards that I promised to send you from all over the world, I will mail the very first one tomorrow from where I am now, looking forward to meet you soon.
